Sonoma County Battery Incentives Guide
Complete guide to battery storage rebates and incentives for Sonoma County residents
No Local CCA Battery Program Yet
Sonoma County doesn't currently offer a dedicated local battery rebate through its community choice aggregator. However, income-qualified residents may still access state SGIP equity rebates (currently waitlisted), and some utilities offer their own programs. The federal 25D homeowner tax credit ended after 2025.
Available Incentives for Sonoma Residents
Federal 25D Tax Credit (ended)
Per the IRS, the 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit (25D) is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025.[1]
Homeowner-owned batteries installed in 2026 do not qualify. Leased or PPA systems are owned by a business that follows separate tax rules; ask the provider how that affects your price.
California Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP)
California's SGIP is one of the nation's longest-running distributed energy incentive programs, administered by the California Public Utilities Commission.[2][3]
The remaining residential budget is the income-qualified Residential Solar and Storage Equity (RSSE) budget: $1,100/kWh of storage (and $3,100/kW of solar) for low-income households installing paired solar + storage, currently waitlisted. General-market residential budgets ($150/kWh) were only available through 2025.
Why Battery Storage Makes Sense in Sonoma
NEM 3.0 Changes Everything
California's new Net Energy Metering rules (NEM 3.0) reduce the value of exported solar by 75%. Batteries are now essential to maximize your solar investment by storing energy for self-use rather than exporting at low rates.[5]
Time-of-Use Rate Arbitrage
California utilities charge significantly more during peak hours (4-9 PM) than during midday solar hours.[4]
With Sonoma Clean Power, peak rates can exceed $0.45-0.55/kWh while off-peak rates are $0.15-0.25/kWh. A battery lets you store cheap midday solar and use it during expensive peak hours, saving $40-100/month.
Backup Power & PSPS Protection
California's Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) can leave homes without power for days during fire season. A battery keeps critical loads running.[5]
Local Energy Context
Sonoma Clean Power serves over 230,000 accounts and offers EverGreen 100% local renewable energy. Following devastating wildfires in 2017 and 2019, Sonoma County residents have strong interest in battery backup for resilience during PSPS events.[4]
